Long story short, I found that the maximum bolt gap that will function in a Cetme L was .012". At .016" the bolt won't even close all the way. CETMEs can be found in the 4-500s and go up from there. Your bud's description sounds like a Century-built CETME. Century is notorious for making and selling poorly-built rifles.
