When you open it in your editor though, that's a much more complex operation than simply playing the video in an optimized player. So, I think this is a performance issue. Fishmonger, made some tests, can't show that 48kHz vs 44.1 kHz influences audio delay, but setting the sound device on Window to 48 kHz (isn't that default for WDM anyway?) helps reducing crackles in preview significantly when concurring access to the audio device occurs (e.g. browser playback and Lightworks), 16-bit vs 24-bit makes no difference, at least here.
