Sharpen skew turning chisel
WebbI've been using the jig for several months now and it works very well. You still have to be careful of the final shape of the chisel but it is easier than doing it free hand. Sharpening the skew is a little harder but the jig helps a lot. At least the angles at the cutting edge of the chisels are consistent and correct.

Webb15 juni 2009 · The top edge is easily sharpened (with a jig) by laying on the top of an 8" wheel. It's the bottom that's tricky. The sheet that you mention (I've seen several versions) is very sketchy. The idea is that the top piece is supposed to be a perfect ellipse. The chisel cut is the problem. I don't really know what the angle should be.

My little skew for pen turning is a bit too small for those larger things I want to turn. Right now I have a stone to sharpen mine on but will just keep that on hand for a miner touch up when the tools need it. Maybe your tool rest is way too low. I like to be on top of the spindle a little when using the skew so I have the tool rest set a little above center. Easier for me. a 1/4” skew will cut well on a 1.5” diameter piece. I found the hollow grind harder to do accurately. I built a jig for my skews that fits on the Oneway flat tool rest which makes grinding the straight edge pretty much fool proof. I know some people claim that a curved edge skew is less likely to catch.
